Activating Person Accounts for Customer Community

I am setting up a new customer community and we are going to be using person accounts as our customer accounts.  I can't figure out how to enable customer user on a person account.  The button is on the page layout when I look at person accounts, but when I go to to enable customer user it isn't there.  Is there an additional step for person accounts to be used for the customer community?  I know how to enable contacts and that is working.  We just need this to work for person accounts.  Thanks
