In Marketo there is a setting to "Block Field Updates".  It will then fill in the field with data if it's empty, but will never overwrite a value in that field once it's been set.  Is there something similar in Pardot?  If not, how do you preserve lead source values?

I'm curious if you think this workaround above would work?  I attempted it, but it looks like there isn't a way in the automation actions to copy a value from one field to another.  Do you know if that's possible?  Appreciate any ideas you might have!

Thanks - I appreciate your responses.  I find it so interesting that there isn't a way to preserve a field value.  Surely others out there would like to track a leads' original source.

I'm wondering if there is a workaround.  If you create and only upload to "Most Recent Lead Source" field (and connect that to the source field in SFDC), and then have an automation rule set up for when that value changes, to check if the leads' "Original Lead Source" field is empty and if so, fill it in with the Most Recent value.  That way, that automation rule is the only thing conneted to the "Original Lead Source" field and the value should be preserved.  Would that work?

Yes that’s correct, unless you choose to not import that field when you import the list into Pardot.

Ok, that makes sense.  However, if a list is imported to Pardot with sources, it would still overwrite the data in that field, correct?

You could amend the sync settings of the field to only use Pardot’s value, that way it wouldn’t be amended by anything in Salesforce. Then as long as no forms or automations are set to change the field value you shouldn’t have an issue.

It'd be an issue in either case - if Salesforce or Pardot updated the lead source field.  So if that field can be overwritten each time, the field isn't actually capturing the source of the lead - its capturing the most recent activity.  Is there no way in Pardot to preserve the original lead source?

    Hi Heinz,

There’s no features like this in Pardot to block the field being updated. Would the issue be with the field being updated from Salesforce, or would it be Pardot changing it later on?
