How do I create a task under an opportunity in Lightning Experience?

When working with customer records and speaking with them, I generally like to open up the Opportunity that I'm working with so that I have my customer's contact information and contact history available in front of me.

Depending on how my communication with the customer goes, I will generally enter some form of information about that communication and then set a new task in place.

I'm wondering how I go about doing this?  The page below is typical of what an opportunity will look like:

The 'Next Steps' field reads: "No next steps. To get things moving, add a task or set up a meeting."
None of the suggestions are highlighted as links and no desciption is provided on how to do any of these tasks.

I could go to the 'Tasks' tab on the left hand side and create a task that way, but it seems counter-intuitive to have to leave the Opportunity that I'm working on to create a new task, re-entering all my opportunity information.

Fields such as 'Log a call', 'Send an Email', 'Next Step', etc aren't available as selectable options.

What am I doing wrong?

Hi Nigel,

1. Edit the Opportunity Page layout and go to the "Salesforce1 and Lightning Experience" section.
2. Click on "override the predefined actions" link, if its available in the Text Section.
3. On the top of the Page Layout edit page, under the save button, click on Salesforce1 Actions. This will show you all the available actions. 
4. Drag and drop "Log a Call" and "Send an Email" to the Salesforce1 and Lightning Experience Actions

You will have to make sure you have “NewEvent” and “NewTask” in Global Action, with the exact caps and no spacing in the Name field . 
Make sure New Task and New Event are in Lightning Experience Actions section. If you did not overwrite global actions in the Opportunity page layout, then make sure these two actions are in global page layout:

Hiya team, thanks for your replies.

'NewTask' and 'NewEvent' don't seem to exist in my list of Global Actions.  I attempted to add them myself, but was uncertain of what additional settings I needed to configure so I stepped back.

"Log a Call" and "Send an Email" are also not available options for me to drag anywhere.

Are there any other suggestions?

If you are using record type then Change the Record Type from --Master-- to a Record type that you would like to use for the publisher action.Depending on the Profile, a user might not have access to a Record Type, then the Global Action will not show. I don't seem to have any of those fancy options available in "Salesforce1 Actions".
What I have is this:

Are you using Record Type for Task? Ok, try to create a custom action for Task.

Unfortunately that link doesn't provide me with any additional useful information. (Actions Missing from Activity Composer on Standard Objects), it only told me what was missing and directed me to a page with the following information (my responses are in bold):

Look at the object’s page layout—opportunities, leads, accounts, contacts, or a custom object that supports activities. Check whether you’ve included the corresponding action in the Salesforce1 and Lightning Experience Actions section of the object’s page layout.
<Note: An object page inherits the actions of the global page layout unless you’ve customized the actions in the Salesforce1 and Lightning Experience Actions section of the object’s page layout.>
**already covered this-the required Global Actions don't exist!**
Have you created a custom record type for calls, tasks, or events? (Record types determine a record’s layout and picklist values. You can define one or more record types for users to choose from when they create an event or a task.) Look at the page layout that you’ve associated with the custom record type. Ensure that you’ve assigned the custom record type to the corresponding action. For example, if you created a custom record type for calls, assign it to the Log a Call action.
**What's a custom record? I've done nothing custom at this point, everything should be stock-standard (or close enough)**
Ensure that your users have permission to view that custom record type.
**I'm the only user, do I need to grant myself permission?  If so, how?**

If you are using record type for Task then you should have permission to get it done. You can contact your system admin to discuss these things and let us know.

What is a "record type for Task"?

As far as I'm aware, I'm the system admin.  Unless Salesforce have allocated me an in-house system admin on their side for me to be in contact with?

Record Type will give you a choice of selection for the type of Task to create.  Try aging to customize the Opportunity layout and drag and drop actions from Quick Actions to Salesforce1 and Lightning Actions.
You can override the predefined actions to set a customized list of actions on Salesforce1 and Lightning Experience.

Maybe this option does not exist in Group edition?

Hi How do i select record Type while creating new Task from activities? Currently while clicking new Task it is redirecting to default RecordType defined in global actions for new Task. Please help me how to diplay and choose Record Types while click the New task.
