Logging a new event in lightning

When logging an event in lightning edition it doesn't show the additional custom fields I have created. I have to create the event first then go back in and update the fields I need after the fact, is there a way around this?

    Are you logging the event by clicking an action button in the upper right corner of a record, by clicking from a tab in the left/middle section of a record layout, or from a component tab in the right column of a record layout? Different places in LEX are driven by different layouts, where in Classic it was one version of a layout every way you logged an event.
