Accounts and opportunities cannot be converted to leads.  in your case you can just convert Accounts back to lead and delete all existing opportunities...then start clean from Lead.

If you have accounts that should be entered as leads the system administrator can mass delete these accounts and re-import the records as leads. Note: you will lose the activities and notes that are associated to those accounts.

1. Run a report to populate the accounts you wish to delete in salesforce.com and export the list to Excel.

2.       Once you export the list to excel, import the list to the leads object.

a.       Setup/Data Management/ Import Leads/ Start the import wizard

3. Mass delete the accounts using the following steps:

Setup | Data Management | Mass Delete.

NOTE: Define criteria to mass delete the accounts. For example, if the accounts are created at a specific time, day or by an explicit user, you will be able to create a list based on the criteria you have defined and delete the records that meet your defined criteria

3. Import your Excel file into the Leads tab.

Alternatively, you can include a value from the account type field "Lead" or "Prospect", your users filter by that field.

Why is this feature not available? Surely there are times where an opportunity is created in error and needs to be moved back to a lead and not having this feature is frustrating as the only other option is to delete and start again.
