Can I configure Chatter to not post my edits/updates in my feed?

As an admin I edit many many records while updating, massaging data, etc.  This results in literally thousands of entries in my feed, which quickly wash away anything I actually post in there myself.  I like the chatter stream attached to the objects being edited, but it would be nice to be able to keep them out of my feed.

Sounds like you might be tracking the activity for too many fields within our Feed Tracking settings. How many fields for each object are you tracking? I'd go there are prune out the fields that are tracked, get it down to a few core important data points for each object. Setup > Customize > Chatter > Feed Tracking.

Just realized I failed to answer your actual question. It's not possible to have the Chatter activity logged on the object but keep it out of your feed. But again, if you're making that many updates, I'd reconsider which fields you need to be causing Chatter. You may find that Field History is sufficient for tracking value changes, but not logging Chatter.

Ah, nice, I hadn't seen these settings before.

I think my real problem is that for some reason, a lot of stuff looks like I'm doing it when its really workflow rules, email2case, and some other automated stuff doing it.

Cool, that should help you reduce a lot of the noise. Something else to bear in mind, if workflows are updating the values on certain objects, users only see that field updating if they're following the object; following you alone isn't enough to make that show up. So start by reducing the tracked fields, but know that from the user's perspective, it's probably pretty easy to see your real Chats since those aren't on an object, they go straight into the Chatter feed.
