excel import relate contact with account

How do I relate a contact with an account when I import a .csv file?

I assume you already uploaded Accounts to the Account object and you want to import related contacts.

To import related contact, you need to first prepare import file for contact records.

You need all the fields in csv file you would like to imports into Contact object plus Account ID which will link link Contact records with Account. You can get account id from the URL of the record or by generating account report.

To illustrate, when you are viewing a record within salesforce.com via a browser, the URL to the record is composed of the instance and the record ID.  For example:  http://na1.salesforce.com/5003000000D8cuI, where '5003000000D8cuI' is the record ID.  For Account, it is Account ID

Other way is to get the Account ID by generating a report on Accounts.

Now you can use import wizard  or Data Loader or Excel Connector to upload contact records.

Feel free to ask if you have any questions.

I had the Account and Contact information in the same csv and the Account and related Contact info on the same row. I had expected it to automatically related the two since they were on the same row.

Oh well, I will just go throw and associate the accounts with the contact data I recognize. =)

Okay so you have not uploaded Accounts. Not to worry. :-) Here is the good news...

You can upload Account and Contact information using single import. It is good you have Account and related Contact info on the same row.  This is how we need to upload Account. and Contact in one go. You can create multiple multiple rows if you have more then one cotact for any accounts.

Here you can use import wizard to upload Accounts and Contacts in one go -

Your Name ---> Setup ---> Administration Setup ---> Data Management ---> Import Accounts / Contacts.

Here you need to map your Account and Contact fields with SFDC fields.

When you import, use
Contact Matching Type as "Name (Recommended)" and Account Matching type as "Name and Site (Recommended)".

First try uploading 5 records and verfiy them in SFDC. Once you are okay with them, you can go with mass import.

Let me know if you have any questions.
