Can you mimic History Tracking on objects that it is not available on?

I would like to know if anyone has been able to mimic the History Tracking capability on objects that Salesforce did not include this standard fucntion on.  At my company, we are currently using assets to track equipment we have sold.  We also use it to track equipment in our inventory that is not "sold" yet as well as trying to track our pool of demo equipment.  The tracking feature here would be invaluable in order to track what demos or any other changes this equipment has been a part of.

 

Any ideas?

 

If I create a whole custom object I think it defaults as being able to use the History Tracking.  Is this my ONLY option?
