What is this error: reached maximum number of external ids and unique fields

When trying to load a package into our Sandbox, we received the Validation Error:

There were custom validation error(s) encountered while saving the affected record(s). The first validation error encountered was "00DT0000000KYrA: VALIDATION_FAILED [Account.SSN__c: reached maximum number of external ids and unique fields: Account.SSN__c: reached maximum number of external ids and unique fields]".

I have been unable to find what limit it is referring to, and how to correct this.

From Salesforce Info online :

For each object that can have custom fields, you can set up to three custom text, number, or email fields as external IDs. An external ID field contains record identifiers from a system outside of Salesforce.

Custom fields marked as Unique count against an object's limit of three External ID fields.

On every field you can specify whether its a unique field ot External ID. When deploying this new field , you are increasing the count of such fields. You'll have to review existing fields and see how many you need to have serve as External IDs and Unique. Or, turn off an External ID temp , deploy the new fields and then choose within limited choices ,which one you want to have as External IDs and Unique.

You can contact salesforce support and ask them to increase this limit of 3 external ids per object, if you provide a business case for why you need the increase.

With Summer'14 release, salesforce has increased the limit from 3 to 7.

There is a limit to have max number of external id fields and it is 7. The unique field also counts in that limit. It means Unique Fileds + External Fields < = 7
